DTS or Keeping Up with the CARdashians?

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

Welcome back, we have Sunday, which is a pretty perfect day to sums up the newest season of our favourite drama: Drive To Survive. This year we are on season 5 and let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster to watch.

Drama, smoke, smell of tiers, rivalry… that all is a part of every year’s season of DTS.

I was really excited to finally see the 5th season of DTS, because let’s be real, this year was very dramatic for all F1 fans. We had Vettel’s retirement, Danny’s trouble with McLaren, Oscar Piastris’ contract drama, Zhou’s Silverstone crash, RedBulls CAP breach, Ferrari’s and Mercedes’ car problems, Binotto leaving Ferrari and much more.

The season 5 came out and I knew my weekend is booked. With the ending of Pre-Season Testing, where the best time was set by Checo Perez (1:30.305) and took down Charles Leclerc’s best result from morning (1:31.042), I was able to watch the whole season 5, so let’s look into it.

Let’s start with interesting names of each episode:

  1. The New Dawn

  2. Bounce Back

  3. Matter of Principal

  4. Like Father, like Son?

  5. Pardon My French

  6. Nice Guys Finish Last

  7. Hot Seat

  8. Alpha Male

  9. Over The Limit

  10. End of the Road

Wow, nice names right? Like a new season of KUWTK. Like I said before, I was waiting for some issues to be shown and explained. Not all I wanted to see was there.

What I really missed there, which I think should have been in the show at least mentioned, was the incident in Japan, with Pierre Gasly almost hitting a tractor on the road. It was a big mess by FIA. Let’s be real, this trouble costed once a really talented driver a life, and what is worse is, that was Pierre’s friend we are talking about (Jules Bianchi 1989-2015). I believe that I was not the only one in our community furious about this problem.

Another thing I was hoping would be shown in the documentary was the rivalry between Checo and Max during São Paulo Grand Prix, because let’s be real, that was a peace of drama, we were all waiting for.

Now I will stop with the judging and go on with what I was happy to see in the docu-serie.

I was really happy to see the friendship between Yuki and Pierre during episode 8. The last days of them together - the legendary Pierre and Yuki Karaoke, the drive around Tokyo, it was all so peaceful and refreshing.

We also got the episode of Seb retiring and reaction of people, Oscar Piastri’s trouble with contract, Danny deciding to part ways with McLaren. This was all big part of 2022 season for all the fans. The scene where Fernando Alonso finds out that Seb is retiring was so rear and real, I think that all of us had the same reaction.

Let’s not forgot about the big and ugly crash in Silverstone that happened to Zhou Guanyu. It was horrible to watch it on TV the day it happened and it was really bitter come back in the serie. I probably did not realised how big of a crash it actually was on the day of a race but when I saw it in the show I was actually terrified. Luckily Zhou was okay and nothing dangerous happened to him.

What was hard for me to watch, was also the fact how much is Mick compared to his dad Michael in the industry. I know it is not easy, you do not perform well, you do not get points, you are out. But let’s stop for a moment and think about Mick’s big responsibility, when everyone is expecting to be at the top as his father. Not easy.

Interesting was all the trouble around the breach of CAP (about 400 000 dollars, not really little) for RB team, all the hate, Zac’s letter to FIA. I do get it, and see in the documentary, how was quickly all “forgotten” because of the death of the founder of RB Dietrich Mateschitz, which was really sad and hurtful news for RedBull Team.

How to end this article then with some nice moments that made my heart race. The end of episode 10 really did warmed my heart, with the little throwback video of Danny’s career.

And do not forget about the Class of 2022 drivers photoshoot. Let’s not forgot their last dinner with all of them together, which was not really mentioned in the show but I think it is important to look back at this beautiful bit of their life.

If you did like my summary do not forget to go on Netflix and watch the whole season too.

What is important to mention is that in less than a week we have our first Grand Prix of the 2023 season!

Until then, don’t forget to reread all my articles and see ya next week with my break down of our first 2023 race in Bahrain.

And remember…Lights out and away we go!!
